Payments and Reconsideration Requests

When will I begin receiving payments?

The payment period begins in July each year. You will receive monthly payments based on your income tax from the previous year. If your monthly payment is $20 or less, you will receive a single combined payment for the entire period on the day the first monthly benefit would have been paid instead of separate monthly payments.

It may take up to 28 calendar days for Service Canada to process your CDB application, or up to 49 days if you are applying on behalf of someone else as their legal representative. You can call Service Canada’s designated CDB call center to check on the status of your application.

You will receive your first payment in the month after your application is approved. You can find exact payment dates on the Service Canada website. Payments will begin in July 2025 for applications received and approved by June 30, 2025.

Miscalculated Payments in July 2025

In August 2025, Service Canada discovered that some people’s monthly CDB payments had been miscalculated. If your CDB application was approved by June 30, the working income exemption may not have been applied to your calculation, meaning that the first payment you received might be below your entitlement, or you did not receive a payment at all.

If you are affected by this issue, you will receive a letter from Service Canada in the mail notifying you of the miscalculation. If you receive this letter, you do not need to file a Request for Reconsideration. Service Canada will automatically recalculate your benefit amount to see if you may be entitled to a higher payment.

Once Service Canada has completed the recalculation, you will receive a second letter confirming your revised monthly benefit amount. You will also receive any money owed to you from the months you were approved for the CDB. Your monthly payment will remain the same until the recalculation is complete.

To check how much you may be eligible to receive, you can use the Canada Disability Benefit Estimator tool.

Can I get retroactive payments?

In the future, you may be able to receive retroactive payments for up to 24 months if you were eligible at the time the payment would have been made. This means that even if you do not currently qualify for the CDB, you may still be able to receive payments for any months in the previous two years in which you were eligible. However, you cannot receive retroactive payments for any months before June 2025.

Multiple payments may be received in one payment period when retroactive payments are being paid. The payment schedule for retroactive payments will depend on when your application is received and approved.

What if I don’t agree with the decision about my application?

If you do not agree with the decision made about your Canada Disability Benefit application, you can request a reconsideration. If you are a legal representative, you can request a reconsideration on someone's behalf.

To request a reconsideration, you will need to submit Form SC CDB006 - Request for Reconsideration of a Canada Disability Benefit Decision. You can download the form from the Service Canada website. You have 180 days from the date of your decision letter (on the top right hand corner of your letter) to submit your reconsideration request. If you are submitting your request after the 180 days, you will need to explain what prevented you from submitting it sooner.

You can submit the form in person at any Service Canada location or by mail at the following address:

Service Canada Centre
CDB Processing Centre
P.O. Box 60
Boucherville, QC, J4B 5E6
